How to Avoid Overpaying for Summer Travel

How to Avoid Overpaying for Summer Travel

By Bob Gucer, CFP®, CFO & Wealth Advisor

Summer travel is one of the most popular and expensive times of the year. With families traveling and limited availability during peak demand, prices for flights, hotels, and rental cars can increase quickly. The good news is that with a little planning and flexibility, you may be able to avoid overpaying and still enjoy a great trip.

Stay Flexible With Travel Dates

One of the most effective strategies is being flexible with your travel dates. Flying midweek instead of weekends, or shifting your trip by even a day or two, may affect pricing. Early morning or late evening flights also tend to be less expensive. If your schedule allows, avoiding peak holiday weekends altogether may help lower costs.

Book Strategically

Another key approach is to book strategically, not necessarily just early, but thoughtfully. For flights, there’s often a “sweet spot” where prices are usually lower before demand increases closer to departure. For hotels, consider refundable bookings early on, then monitor prices and rebook if rates drop. Many travelers overlook this simple step, but it may help reduce costs in some situations.

Watch for Misleading Deals

It’s also important to be mindful of the noise in the travel space. From flashy promotions to last-minute deals, not everything that’s marketed as a bargain will necessarily provide the lowest overall cost. Travelers can end up paying more by chasing urgency rather than focusing on value. Instead, compare options across platforms, consider total trip cost and not just headline prices, and stay focused on what fits your needs rather than what’s being pushed.

Use Rewards Thoughtfully

Finally, consider leveraging loyalty programs and credit card benefits (my personal favorite!) Points, miles, and status perks may help reduce travel costs, whether through free nights, seat upgrades, or included amenities like breakfast. When used strategically, these benefits may help make an otherwise expensive trip more cost-effective, depending on the program terms and availability.

With a bit of planning and a disciplined approach, summer travel may not require  the same level of premium pricing. The key is to stay flexible, avoid reactive booking decisions, and focus on long-term value rather than short-term hype.
